Police are appealing for information after items of jewellery were stolen from a house in Beech Park in the West Hill area of Ottery St Mary.

The burglary happened between 8.45am on Friday 26 May and 2.30pm on Sunday 29 May while the occupants were away on holiday. A glazed rear door of the property was smashed using a long handled axe.

Police are advising members of the public to ensure that gardening tools and items such as ladders which could be used to assist offenders in gaining access to a property are properly secured at all times.

There are more things you can do to keep your property and possessions safe if you are not at home:

Ask a trusted friend, neighbour or relative to look out for your property while you are away. Ask them to collect post from the letterbox so it does not build up, put the bins out and open and close curtains.

  • Cancel newspaper and milk deliveries.
  • Use automatic timer switches for lights in key rooms.
  • If you have a driveway ask a friend or neighbour to park their car there so it looks like someone is home.
  • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation of this burglary is asked to email 101@dc.police.uk or call 101, quoting log number 0547 of 29 May 2016

Information can also be passed anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers, by calling 0800 555 111 or reporting online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org and quoting the same reference.
