Improvements to a pedestrian and cycle route on Ashburton Road in Newton Abbot will get underway next week.

Work on the A383 between Orchard Grove and Oak Park Road will start on Monday (30 July) – initially with two-way traffic lights in place between Laurie Avenue and Oak Park Road after 9.30am.

From Monday 6 August, Laurie Avenue will be made a temporary one-way system for around six weeks. Access will be allowed from Ashburton Road, and exit via Rosemary Avenue.

Around 1.2km of the northern footpath route is being widened to develop a shared pedestrian and cycle path along Ashburton Road, linking new housing developments and the town centre.

Resurfacing and drainage improvements will be carried out as part of the scheme, which is due to be completed next Spring. It is being funded by the government’s National Productivity Investment Fund, Local Transport Plan, and developer contributions.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “It's vital that we develop infrastructure to encourage more walking and cycling across Devon. By providing safe and convenient routes from new housing developments at Houghton Barton and Hele Park it can help reduce short car journeys, reducing congestion and improving air quality.”

Throughout the scheme, the majority of work will be carried out using two-way traffic signals. However, during the course of the project, some road closures, temporary one-way systems and stop and go boards with a convoy vehicle will be needed.

Work will be carried out on Laurie Avenue, Elmwood Avenue, Applegarth Close and Chercombe Valley Road.

Overnight closures will be needed at Ashburton Road for around a week, early next year. However, where possible, side roads will remain open.

Work will be carried out by contractor Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd.
