New Devon businesses which have sprung up during lockdown are being given expert help to take them to the next level.

The Business and Intellectual Property Centre in Exeter (BIPC) is staging a free 13 week ‘Bedroom to Business’ webinar course aimed at start-up entrepreneurs which are ready to expand (from 8th September).

Since November 2020, when BIPC in Devon launched its online offering after the first lockdown, it’s helped 447 businesses. A further 58 people have also come through the doors for one-to-one meetings since the library buildings in Exeter, Paignton and Barnstaple reopened.

BIPC Manager Richard Love said: “Covid has been tough and it has pushed many people to find alternative sources of income. Many of these new businesses have started as a result of redundancy or another business failing. A year or so on, they have a real future potential to grow. But they need the right help to focus, and that’s why we are offering this 13 week long comprehensive package of webinars to help anyone turn their fledgling idea into a proper business.”

BIPC Devon is one of 15 regional centres around the country funded by the Government to help entrepreneurs, inventors, start-ups and small-medium businesses who want to learn and grow. BIPC Devon provides free access to information and resources online and in person at Exeter, Barnstaple and Paignton Library.

Entrepreneur Clare Collis said: “I’ve accessed several of the BIPC Devon services over the past year and have found them to be invaluable sources of information each time. The staff have always been kind, professional and helpful, even when I haven’t really known exactly what I am looking or asking for. I’d recommend them as the perfect place to start if you are even considering something IP related within your business, or if you have never even considered IP and your business.”

Another entrepreneur who used the resources from the BIPC to start her Exmouth-based business said: “The BIPC is excellent! So valuable and down-to-earth. I have been so impressed and relieved to have found these great webinars and expert 121 advice from BIPC - especially during the (sometimes daunting) period of setting up my own business. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

The free 13 week ‘Business to Bedroom’ course will be led by author, mentor, trainer and founder of the Small Business Sales Academy James White.

James said: “I’ve adapted 20 years of his own business mistakes and successes and developed a practical method that small business owners can use to achieve a consistent, secure and stable income in their own business.”

The course will run online every Wednesday and also uploaded to the BIPC website https://bipc.librariesunlimited.org.uk/ to watch again. There will also be additional webinars and workshops alongside this training, almost every day. The content will cover everything from negative self-talk, goal setting and time management, to intellectual property, sales, marketing, Facebook groups and accounting basics.

The course, like everything from the BIPC , is absolutely free and starts on Wednesday 8th September. And if you can’t attend, you can watch all of the webinars on the BIPC website.
