Devon Couple Win £300,000 on a National Lottery Scratchcard
A local Devon couple have won £300,000 on a National Lottery scratchcard. Robert Kittle and his partner, Julie Goodwin, explained that they went to the shop to pick up a newspaper, but ended up picking up a scratchcard instead. They soon saw that they had won, with their aim being to spend the money on a holiday to Las Vegas.
Local Lottery Winners in Devon and Exeter
A father of four, who once appeared on the television show Homes under the Hammer, also got lucky with the lottery when he won £1 million in 2025. Living roughly 50 minutes away from Devon, he popped out for a burger and stopped off at the local shop for a scratchcard, where he became the newest millionaire. Craig, who operates a business in Liskeard, taped the ticket to his body and kept it in a plastic bag. He soon realised that it wasn’t a good idea, and then put the ticket into a saucepan on top of the kitchen cabinet.
They are going to be spending the money on a home renovation, and with the future goal of buying a new property. In 2023, a local Devon bus driver also won £1 million on a National Lottery scratchcard while waiting for a kebab, showing the area has had a lot of winners in recent years. Having rented and never been in a position to buy his own home, he decided to buy a property with the money. Although wins on the National Lottery are very rare, the North Devon Community Lottery is open to locals and helps to raise money for local causes. This offers a 1 in 50 chance to win, with a potential £25,000 prize.
Could Scratch Cards Be Going Digital?
Even though some people across Exeter and Devon have won on scratchcards recently, it’s interesting to see that things could be changing. High-tech dispensers are rolling out to change how National Lottery scratchcards are dispensed. The SCiQ retail ecosystem has a 27-inch display, a touchscreen terminal, and an automated dispensing unit. This speeds up sales and ensures that there are real-time analytics for wins.
This move is to help streamline lottery tickets while making them more accessible. This makes total sense as well, especially when you look at the fact that similar traditional games that have been around for many years, like bingo, are mainly digital in this day and age. In fact, the scratch cards are already being used in the form of bingo promotions as well. Online, you can get free spins bingo offers where you can deposit £10 for 100 free spins. At the same time, when you stake £3 on bingo, you are also eligible for a free scratchcard, which you can redeem digitally, once a day. This gives you the chance to win up to £10, showing how scratchcards have every potential to go fully digital one day.
Moves like this help to show how scratchcards are already aligning with the digital world, with tech like this showing how the process can be modernised. Each time a ticket is bought, the artwork is linked with the system, which records the ticket information. When the new system has been tested, it's expected to roll out across the UK, so we may see a big surge in digital scratchcards in 2026.
