Council holds apple tree care day for residents at new community orchard in Exmouth

Tree care and campfire cooking was the order of the day on Saturday 13 June at the Littleham Community Orchard, at Bidmead Close in Littleham. Local people came to check on the apple trees, which they had planted in February, as well as to put mulch around the tree bases and cook some bread twists on a  campfire.

The site, which is behind the community centre, is part of an East Devon initiative to plant more traditional orchards across the district. The Countryside team has, to date, restored or planted five orchards on local nature reserves.

Littleham Exmouth Councillor John Humphreys, who is Member Champion for Exmouth, said: “The local community has shown great support for the orchard and the tree care day has helped celebrate this as well as the continued good work. The trees are all looking healthy and everyone enjoyed themselves. Watch out for more orchard events in the summer and autumn holidays including pressing some local apple juice.”

The tree care event was organised by East Devon’s Community Development and Countryside Teams.  For more information or if you would like to get involved please contact the Countryside Team on 01395 517 556 or email. countryside@eastdevon.gov.uk.
