People in the South West are being left to cope with tinnitus alone, but a new event in Exeter aims to change that.

Recent data shows the South West has one of the highest prevalence of tinnitus in England, with an estimated 20.8% of the population affected. In rural areas like Devon, limited transport, patchy connectivity, and a lack of referral pathways mean many people are left without access to support.

The impact is significant. People with tinnitus often report isolation, anxiety, reduced confidence, and difficulty staying in work or social situations, with few opportunities to connect with others who understand.

Now, Tinnitus UK is taking action.

A local solution to a national problem

On May 8, Tinnitus UK will host “Let’s Talk Tinnitus: Exeter”, a free community event designed to provide practical advice, reassurance, and a pathway into ongoing local support.

The event is part of a wider initiative to build new support networks across Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, including local groups, online sessions, and volunteer-led communities.

Event details

  • Date: May 8
  • Time: 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
  • Location: Exeter Community Centre
  • Cost: Free (booking required)

Attendees will:

  • Learn the basics of tinnitus and how to manage it
  • Discover practical tips to improve daily life
  • Find out how to connect with local support groups
  • Meet others and realise they are not alone

Building long-term support

The Exeter event is just the start. With funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, Tinnitus UK is working to establish new support groups across the South West over the next two years.

These groups will provide:

  • Ongoing peer support and shared experience
  • Safe, welcoming spaces to talk openly
  • Improved access to information and coping strategies
  • Stronger links between communities and healthcare services

Call to action

Tinnitus UK is also calling on local people to get involved, whether by attending, or helping to build support in their community.

Places for the Exeter event are limited. Early booking is advised at: tinnitus.org.uk/event/lets-talk-tinnitus-exeter
