Bagel man Dan turns lockdown idea into Exeter launch
Exeter has welcomed a new, independent food shop, The Bagel Shop, to Queen Street.
Its offering of freshy prepared locally sourced bagels has already drawn a strong and enthusiastic response from locals since opening in March.
With chutneys from West Devon, bagels from Devon, meat from Totnes the focus is very much on locally sourced good quality ingredients. Built around the idea of good food without compromise, The Bagel Shop champions ‘no guilty eating’ offering a healthier, feel-good option.
Dan Lakeman owner of The Bagel Shop said, “Exeter is an incredible city with such a strong sense of identity and community. As someone who’s grown up in East Devon, it means a lot to be opening here. What started as a small idea during lockdown has grown into something I’m hugely proud of, but the thinking hasn’t changed. Good food, no fuss, and ingredients you can feel good about eating every day. The reaction we’ve had in Exeter so far has been amazing, and that’s been special to see.”
During lockdown Dan began making bagels at home, he opened his first shop in the seaside town of Sidmouth in 2020. Since opening his first shop, he has launched a new shop every year, with The Bagel Shops now in Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Exeter and actively looking to open further sites in Exeter and the wider South West region over the next few months. The business has grown to a team of over 100 people while remaining firmly independent and rooted in the South West.
With a family background in the local food industry and a stint at Lympstone Manor, under acclaimed chef Michael Caines, Dan developed a clear philosophy to keep things simple and do them exceptionally well, taking inspiration from his Australian travels and their food outlets known for their fresh, healthy produce and relaxed, high-quality approach to everyday dining.
Dan added; “This year, The Bagel Shop celebrates its sixth anniversary and it’s great to be here in the city centre for it. I want the shops to be a place to come and relax, it’s an inclusive vibe. By working with local producers, I can ensure products remain fresh and high quality at an accessible price, making it a go-to option for affordable, unfussy lunches.”
Dan remains closely involved in the day-to-day running of the business, often found on the frontline serving customers his very own ‘RedStack’ coffee which he brews himself in Sidmouth or serving a slice of homemade cake made by his baker Laura. Alongside his focus on food, he is committed to embedding The Bagel Shop in the local community, supporting events and initiatives such as the Sidmouth Folk Festival.
With ambitions to continue expanding while staying true to its roots, The Bagel Shop is quickly establishing itself as a South West success story driven by a local entrepreneur with a clear vision and a genuine love for his craft.
The Bagel Shop is already available online.
