Fun for young people at Tiverton Adventure Playground this summer

There’s loads of great things to do at Tiverton Adventure Playground this summer thanks to a £10,000 Lottery grant.

The 3.5 acre wooded site in Cowleymoor Road, Tiverton, will be open between 10am and 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout August for a Summer Play Scheme.   The play scheme is completely free and will be supervised by four qualified, experienced staff at all times.

This summer’s theme is The Roundhouse Project, where Forest School Worker and Play Scheme Leader Kate Smith will be constructing a wooden hut on site and inviting young people to take part in designing and building it.

Young people can also build dens, cook around the camp fire, take part in craft activities using recycled materials, get involved in outdoor games, photography and badge making.

“If the good weather continues”, commented Helen Hyland, the chairperson of Tiverton Adventure Play, the charity that manages the site, “we’ll have a bumper summer thanks to the grant from the Big Lottery Fund.  The district council’s grants officer helped us win the award and its great the council has someone who can make it easier for groups to get the resources they need. It makes such a big difference to local  communities.”

Children and young people aged 8-13 attending the play scheme just need to sign in at the front gate, but children aged under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or carer.  Staff may expect young people aged 13 to take more responsibility by helping paid staff.  Families are always very welcome.

Wearing clothing that is suitable for robust outdoor play is advised, while children and young people who are staying most of the day are encouraged to bring a packed lunch.

Opened in 1974, Tiverton Adventure Playground is the largest designated adventure play facility within a 50 mile radius.  The site is owned by Mid Devon District Council and leased to the charity Tiverton Adventure Play.
