
Exeter historian to analyse the US Declaration of Independence 250 years on
With the spotlight on the 250th Anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, Topsham Museum is proud to have the unique opportunity to stage a talk by Exeter's own award-winning historian of the US, Dr Henry Knight Lozano.
Marking the 250th anniversary, the lecture will explore the cause of the declaration and its consequences which continue to this day.
Titled ‘1776 and the US Declaration of independence’ this lecture - by award-winning Exeter historian Dr Henry Knight Lozano - will address key questions about the event.
Who wrote the declaration and why? Were the grievances against Britain justified? How did the rest of the world feel about this rupture of a British colony?
The lecture will also touch on tensions inherent in the Declaration and the remarkable afterlife of its call for independence.
Dr Henry Knight Lozano is co-director of Liberal Arts and an award-winning historian of the United States based at the University of Exeter.
He is the author of two monographs about the United States; co-editor of a book collection on the 1965 Selma civil rights march; and the author of numerous journal articles on aspects of US history. He is currently completing his next book.
Dr Knight Lozano will give his talk as part of Topsham Museum’s lecture series in Matthews Hall, Topsham,on Thursday July 9.
