Ride On gets key workers ready to ride

Thanks to a grant from the Big Bike Revival for Key Workers initiative from Cycling UK, Ride On, the Exeter bike recycling charity, is offering free services to key workers.

The Covid-19 Government advice to avoid public transport has led to more key workers looking for a reliable form of transport that allows for effective social distancing and gives them a fast, efficient and independent way of getting around.

“Whether they are commuting or delivering essential items, cycling is the perfect solution! Plus, it’s good for physical and mental health. So, we've designed a Ready to Ride session to help key workers get the most out of cycling,” says Sam White, Ride On Workshop Manager.

The sessions, which will take place outside with social distancing measures in place, will be tailored for each key worker, to help address their individual needs. So, if you're a key worker who already has a bike, the session might include:

Basic bike maintenance – a bike safety check, making simple adjustments and demonstrating how to maintain your bike and carry out simple jobs

Bike set up - we'll help set up your bike for comfort and efficiency, by checking saddle and handlebar positioning, for example.

Sharing local knowledge  – if you’re new to cycling it can be hard to know the best routes for bikes around our city, or even what is on offer from other cycling partners in Exeter.

Free D-Lock & Bring Your Own Bike membership

All Ready to Ride sessions also include a free D-Lock padlock to keep your bike safe, as well as a free Bring Your Own Bike induction. “Although not currently running due to Covid-19 restrictions, this is our weekly open workshop session where individuals can work on their bikes in a supportive environment,” explains Sam. “Once it is up and running again, this will provide you with a space to come and maintain your bike to practice and develop your skills.”

Buy a bike

“If you haven’t got a bike, we can also help by giving you priority bookings to view our stock and are happy to build bikes to your own specification if required. So, if you want mudguards, a pannier rack, or a more upright position, for example, that’s fine,” says Sam.

If you’re a key worker and you think you would benefit from a Ready to Ride session, book yourself a place by   contacting Sam:  sam@rideoncycling.org

Or If you know a key worker who would like to take advantage of the Ready to Ride initiative please pass the details on to them.
