Fantastic fringes by Ellie Winkler of Saks, Princesshay

One of the greatest plunges into a new look, without serious length loss and the commitment of a major restyle, is to have a fringe.

Fringes can suit any length of hair, most face shapes and can be sweeping, short, soft and super funky. A fringe can dramatically change a look and most importantly the feel of a haircut.

A fringe can bring out different features of a face depending on where it sits. Eyes can become instantly emphasized by framing them with a shorter fringe above, while a wide fringe can open up the face and show off gorgeous delicate cheek bones that may otherwise be swamped with hair.

An angular face shape, round face or heavy jawline can be instantly softened by putting in an angled or sweeping fringe. By adding an angle to the face you immediately soften one side of the face and give definition and diffused shape.

Beautiful full fringes with gloss and shine can make a real statement.  A fuller fringe will also sit well over pesky cow licks or strange hairlines. A good blast and thorough dry with a hairdryer will ensure your hair sits as directed until it is washed again. A full fringe can be cut sharply, straight across or rounded, angling and arching with the eyebrows to create curvaceous shaping.

A full fringe can make wispy fly-away hair look substantial and even chunky and can make super thick hair defined and stylised. Long peak-a-boo shaggy fringes seen on Zooey Dechanel and Chanel model Freja Beha are so versatile and amongst the most requested because they are long and swingy as a full fringe or can be swept or parted and are soft and fabulous.

Short fringes can freshen up a much loved style by being cut blunt for maximum impact, asymmetric for an angle or like Marion Cotillard - raggedy and textured for a cheeky elfin look.

A skinny or thin, wispy fringe should be avoided. Most of the time the hair just looks broken and frail and is not a good look. The key is to commit to a look and fringe and accept no half measures. This will look more stylish and will be easier to wear all day without any attention.

Your hairdresser should be more than happy to give your fringe a quick spruce up in between appointments with a fringe trim. It is worth making the effort to go into a salon so that your fringe is kept in tip-top shape and can even make the whole look last a bit longer.
