Safety first during National Chip Week (18-24 February)

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are urging chip lovers to take care when they indulge in one of the nation’s favourite foods – chips!

Leaving a chip pan unattended for any length of time can have disastrous results as the oil can easily overheat and ignite. A simple switch from the pan to the oven or a temperature controlled deep-fat fryer can help prevent the worst.

“From the chip shop to the kitchen table, chips will quite rightly be on the menu this week,” says Fire Investigation Officer, Mike Burroughs. “But the smallest distraction when using a hot chip...

Most people have extension leads in their homes, often using four-way bar adaptors to increase the number of appliances that you can plug into a wall socket.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service remind you that although there is space to plug in four appliances, this does not mean it is always safe to do so.

Different electrical appliances use different amounts of power. To avoid the risk of overheating and possibly fire, you should never plug into an extension lead or socket appliances that together use more than 13 amps or 3000 watts of energy.

Home Truths: Is your property turning buyers off?

Estate Agents are frequently asked, "Is there anything you feel we should change about our house or things we could do that you feel will help sell it?" Unfortunately the stock answer to this from most estate agents is usually, "Oh gosh, no, it’s lovely, sign here..."

As the weather gets colder over the weekend, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service reminds you to stay safe as well as warm in your home.
