The first ever sculpture exhibition held at Overbeck’s, the exotic hidden garden overlooking Salcombe estuary and the sea, is proving to be a great success with visitors this summer.

Each of the ten sculptures chosen for the exhibition, entitled ‘An Uncommon Quest’, is as unique and spectacular as Overbeck’s sub-tropical garden. Inspired by the beautiful natural forms all around, they reflect the spirit of Overbeck’s as a place of curiosity, discovery and creativity.

Mother and son, Coral and Bruin Valentine from Cumbria, visited Overbeck’s recently. After spending time learning about the history of the house, having the Polyphon (large music box) played for them, and hunting for ‘Fred the friendly ghost’, they spent the afternoon deciding upon their top three sculptures.

Coral opted for the mysterious Time Travellers by Melaine Deegan, which she said gave her ‘goose bumps’ as she could just see them wandering through her own garden. Bruins favourite was the Maze by Pippa Unwin. He had great fun imagining he was a knight following the trail deep into the labyrinth and spying through the hole. Coral said: "We arrived early and are stayed late into the day - we loved it here and didn’t want to leave."

Another favourite with visitors is White Bird Soaring by Jeremy Davies. He said: "This is a very exciting event and I am delighted to be part of it. The views alone are beautiful and the gardens lovely to wander amongst. The exciting competition adds something more. I am sure no visitor will go away disappointed."

Denise Salter Assistant Property Manager said: "The sculpture exhibition is proving to be a real joy with our visitors who are having great fun voting for their favourites and deciding which one they would like to take home with them."
