If you feel cramped in your small double bed at night, it might be time to upgrade. A king mattress can be ideal for couples and families alike. You might know about a queen size already, but a king is even bigger. While the 16-inch difference between a queen and a king mattress may seem insignificant, that space can make a huge difference in your quality of sleep each night. However, there are things you need to consider when looking to purchase one. To help you make the right choice, here are some top tips so you know what you look for when buying a king mattress.

Actual Size

The first thing you’ll need to do is check the size of the mattress. Typically, a king-sized mattress is 150cm by 200cm. It’s important to check this with the manufacturer as you want to make sure you’re actually getting what you pay for. You also need to know the size to ensure that the mattress will fit on your current bed frame, and if not, you’ll need to get a new one. Another key thing to consider when it comes to the size is whether or not it will fit your room. You don’t want to receive your mattress and realise that it takes up way too much space. Make sure to measure your bedroom and check that it will fit nicely with your floor plan.

Cost

You’ll most likely be concerned about the price, as you’re probably expecting to pay a lot more for a king mattress. Although in general, king-sized mattresses are more expensive because they’re larger, you can find some that won’t break the bank and still be of high quality. Don’t fall victim to an offer that seems too good to be true, because most of the time it is. You should expect to pay a fair price for your mattress, but it will be more expensive than if you were to buy a double bed. Try checking out multiple suppliers and comparing their prices to ensure you get the best deal on your king mattress.

Type Of Mattress

There are different types of mattresses too, each with their own benefits so it’s important to know which you prefer. Memory foam is one of the most popular choices as it molds with your body and provides you with full, cushioned support. You can also get cooling gel technology in these mattresses too, so if you’re a hot sleeper, they can be the best choice. Spring or coil mattresses are also great for hot sleepers as they keep the air circulating throughout the night. Latex mattresses are extremely durable, so if you’re getting a king-sized one to accommodate your kids and pets, it will be able to withstand any amount of jumping about.

Firmness

One of the most important parts of your mattress decision is how firm it is. This will determine how restful and comfortable your sleep is each night, so don’t just assume softer or firmer is better. It can all depend on your body weight and how you sleep. Typically, the more you weigh, the firmer you’ll need your mattress to be as you don’t want to sink into it, and your body won’t be supported if it’s too soft. Side sleepers tend to sleep better on a softer mattress as it stops their joints from becoming strained or succumbing to pressure. Back and front sleepers will most likely need a firmer mattress as their body needs to be correctly aligned and their neck fully supported. This is why it’s key to know which firmness is best for your body, as choosing the wrong one can be detrimental to your sleep quality. You’ll soon know if the firmness is wrong because you’ll wake up with more aches and pains than you did before!

A king-sized mattress can be a fantastic upgrade in the bedroom, but you need to know what you’re looking for when purchasing one.  Make sure you check out all the aspects of the ones you’re interested in and be sure to shop around. Once you’ve made the right choice, you’ll soon be sprawled out each night, enjoying how much more space you’ve got!
