Summer plans might be dashed this summer, but that doesn’t mean you cannot have a great time with the whole family. All you need is a rear garden and some simple camping equipment, and you can transform your garden space into a summer family getaway kids will love.

It can be hard to explain the necessity of social distancing and quarantine. Kids just want to head outside and explore. They want to run wild and have fun. You can’t give them everything that they want, but you can build an adventure right on your property with this guide:

Get Everything That You Need

What you use will depend entirely on the size of your garden. If you have a lot of space, then you can set up a full tent, a table and chair set, and even a pop-up gazebo to recreate the camping vibe. Smaller gardens might have to deal with a tarp tent that provides a shaded area in your garden and some outdoor chairs or mats to make it comfortable to sit outside for long periods.

Stocking up on supplies should also be done now, especially if you typically use Amazon for many of your standard needs, as processing times can now mean you won’t get the item for a month.

Take stock of what you have and what you need. If you have a barbecue in your backyard, for example, check your propane levels, and if you need a top-up head online to industrial gas suppliers to order more. You’ll want enough to handle the whole summer.

Know the Rules

It’s important to know what you can and cannot do to recreate the camping experience. For example, it is legal to have a campfire in your backyard, but only if it doesn’t cause a nuisance to your neighbours. This means you cannot burn household waste.

Small fires that you roast marshmallows on aren’t likely to cause a problem, though if a neighbour complains and your council sends you a notice, you do need to follow it. So long as no waste is burned and you do follow the notice instructions if you do receive one, however, campfires are good to go!

Plan Camping Activities

You can’t do everything you would on a campsite, like hiking, swimming, or fishing, but you can plan quite a few fun activities in their stead. Order some painting equipment (now, ideally, to compensate for the longer processing and shipping times non-essential items are experiencing right now) and have outdoor painting sessions with the whole family.

Get activity books to complete outside, lawn games to play, crafts to enjoy, and so on. Try to keep your kids outside and active.

Cook Outdoors

Enjoy barbecues or even campfire meals with your kids. Teach them how to cook, come up with new meal ideas, and have lovely lunches or dinners outside. Cooking outside ensures that the whole family spends more time outdoors. You could even plant fruits and vegetables with your kids and enjoy fresh produce right from home to complement your delicious BBQ meals.
