For a modern addition that will slot into any space, an LED bathroom mirror seamlessly combines functionality with sleek design.

Installing an LED mirror can be a rewarding project to take on yourself. If you’re new to this type of DIY, read on for our installation guide.

Why choose an LED mirror?

As well as illuminating your reflection with a flattering glow, LED mirrors also add a touch of sophistication to your bathroom décor. Whether you’ve opted for neutrals or tapped into the peach fuzz trend, these can be a striking, yet functional addition to your bathroom.

Choose your mirror

You’ll need to make sure you select the perfect LED bathroom mirror for your space. There are different illuminated mirrors on the market, so there are plenty of options to choose from.

Begin by considering factors such as size and style. Are you decorating a large family bathroom? Or have you decided to take on the challenge of the more compact en suite? These considerations will affect the dimensions and look you go for. Also, you’ll need to factor in the practical details. Do you want dimmable lights or built-in demisters? This will also affect the type of mirror you buy.

Once you’ve made your choice, you can begin the installation process.

Setting up

Measure the area where you plan to hang the mirror to ensure it fits properly. Take the time to make sure it will sit flush with the wall. Use a spirit level to make sure it’s in the right position and mark on the wall with pencil where you want your mirror to sit. This will help to guide you when it comes to drilling in screws.

Next, gather the necessary tools for installation, including a drill, screwdriver, level, and electrical tape, along with screws.

Wiring

The wiring process for an LED bathroom mirror can vary depending on your electrical expertise and how complex your existing wiring setup is. If you're confident in your DIY skills and familiar with electrical work, you might want to tackle the wiring yourself. However, if you're unsure or uncomfortable with electrical tasks, it's best to speak to a qualified electrician.

Start by turning off the power to the bathroom circuit at the main electrical panel to avoid any risk of electric shock. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off before you do anything else.

Once you’re sure it’s safe, carefully route the wiring from the mirror to connect to the power supply at the nearest power source. This is typically a nearby light fixture or outlet. Secure the wiring in place using cable clips to prevent any loose or exposed wires.

Install and test

Once the wiring is in place, you can install the LED bathroom mirror. Line up the mirror with the pencil markings you made earlier to make sure you’re still happy with the positioning. Next, drill pilot holes at the marked locations, then attach the mounting brackets securely to the wall using screws.

Once the mirror is securely mounted, you can then double-check the wiring connections are secure and properly insulated. Carefully tuck any excess wiring behind the mirror then turn the power back on at the electrical panel. Test the functionality of the LED lights and make any adjustments to the settings until you get the brightness you need in the space.

Finally, inspect your mirror to make sure everything is installed correctly and safely. Test the mirror's demister function, if applicable, to ensure it effectively prevents fogging. Make sure that other features like motion sensors are working properly.

Now you can step back and admire your newly installed LED bathroom mirror.
