Planning for the arrival of a new baby, even more so if this is your first child, is a thrilling and nerve-wracking time in equal measure.

One necessary project that will certainly allow your creative juices to flow is to design, decorate and shop for a nursery room. Here are some top tips to help you on your way.

Make the Décor Adaptable

You will already be fully aware that babies grow at an exponential rate, and it is highly likely that the outfit gifts your parents have gifted the baby, for example, will probably only get one or two outings before the clothes are too small.

Considering this on a wide basis, when designing the new nursery décor, you should aim to make it adaptable as your baby grows. One handy tip is to use reusable and simple-to-remove wall stickers with themes for the colours and design of the nursery that can be replaced regularly.

Colourful & Practical Accessories

Naturally, for the first few months after you have brought your newborn baby home, your parental duties will be heavily focused on feeding and changing, but it is a good idea to prepare the nursery for future learning and playtime too.

Take a look at these beautiful playmats from https://playmatsdirect.co.uk/ designed for a baby’s nursery, and spend time choosing the right ones to blend in with the design aesthetic of the rest of the room.

Other smaller accessories to buy ahead of the birth include:

  • A cot
  • Baby carrier
  • Changing table
  • Bedding
  • Bassinet
  • Nappies
  • Cleaning products
  • Breast pump
  • Milk bottles

Safety Is the Priority

Unfortunately, even though here in the United Kingdom there are numerous health and safety legislations in place for cots and other newborn baby equipment being sold, there are still cheaper and easy-to-break baby equipment and cots that do not meet these exacting standards.

Ensure that any cot you purchase fits the BS EN 717:2:2008 standards and that you create a safety zone around it once it is in position. Make sure the cot is not underneath or near a door or window, that the bars are firmly secured, there are no splinters or other exposed pieces of wood and that there are no cords dangling too close.

Storage, Storage & More Storage

Finally, it is also a fantastic idea to not only prepare and invest in bulk orders of items you will need a lot of, such as nappies and cleaning wipes but also to erect storage shelves and units to store everything safely.

Many new parents accidentally underestimate the sheer amount of storage they will need, and even though your baby will be tiny and, for a short time, entirely immobile, the accessories and belongings for your baby will take up a great deal of room.

As previously stated, your baby’s safety is the priority, so make sure all shelves and drawer units are securely affixed to the floor and that plug sockets are covered.
