4 tips for creating a fun children’s bedroom

Unlike adult bedrooms, children’s bedrooms are not just a place for sleep, but also play, so to help them enjoy the room to its fullest potential, it’s worthwhile to give it a cool makeover that displays their personality and inspires their playtime.
To help you out, we’ve created this list of four tips to create your child’s dream bedroom.

1. Choose a Theme

This is an important first step because it will influence the décor in the rest of the room. Will it be all bright colours or pastels? Will there be cartoon characters painted on the wall or pictures of friends and family? Will the bed be on the floor or up on a platform? It all depends on the theme.

The theme is something that will be very personal to your child and their tastes. If they like animals, consider having a safari-themed room with a cabin bed to mimic being in the treetops looking out at the animals. If they like their cars, either from the Pixar movie or real-life, get a carpet designed to look like a race track and a car bed for kids. 2. Pick your colours

Kids love bright colours but it’s not advisable to paint the entire room neon pink because it still needs to be a place of calm that will aid in restful sleep. Limit more powerful colours to decorations, like a painting of a fave TV character, or opt for some sort of barrier between the bed space and the rest of the room, like curtains.

For school-aged children, decorate the area in front of their desk with focus colours, like yellow and blue, that aid in concentration and reduce tension.

3. Maximise your space

For those with limited floor-space, a lofted bed with a desk or a play area underneath can increase space by a third depending on the size of the room.

There’s no need to buy a brand-new bed. The platform that it sits on can be created in just a day with plywood and an online tutorial. Then, the existing bed can be placed on top. (It can even be boxed in to hide a messy bed during playdates or to block out the rest of the room at night.)

4. Give it a unique twist

For a child’s bedroom that is really out there, opt for something that most kids won’t have in their room. Ideas include:

• A slide to get down from the bed, which makes getting up more fun
• A swing in the middle of the room, which doubles as an extra seat when friends come over
• A “tent” over the bed and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling
• A basketball hoop above the bin or laundry basket
• A mural featuring their favourite cartoon characters and even the child themselves
• A blackboard wall to allow children to draw on the walls without getting in trouble
• Fairy lights around the room to make the room look magical

These incredible bedroom ideas are the perfect thing to take a child’s room from plain to perfect. It may not be enough to get kids to go to bed on time or keep their rooms tidy, but fingers crossed.
