When it comes to honeymoons, most of us will think of the likes of the Maldives, the Caribbean or even Italy or France, but trends seem to be shifting and now Tanzania has been selected as the newlywed holiday destination of choice.

According to a new survey, put together by Tanzania Odyssey, the stunning landscapes and rich culture of the East African nation is the number one choice of one sixth of honeymooners, a higher percentage than both Hawaii and Mauritius.

The news comes as more couples are shying away from the traditional post-wedding rest and relaxation. As lifestyles change, more and more brides and grooms prefer to inject a little more excitement into their post-celebration getaway; a break from sipping sangria on a sandy European beach.

The study found that 40% of couples now would prefer an adventure holiday, so it’s no real surprise to see leading safari destinations attract more loved-up tourists.

Packed with activities, from hiking up the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, to heading out on safari in one of the continent’s most breathtaking national parks, there really is so much to experience and enjoy.

Serengeti National Park is perhaps the most famous attraction and one of the major reasons couples head to Tanzania.

The iconic national park gives honeymooners the chance to see the grace of the lion, leopard and elephant in their natural habitat, while you can also get up close and personal with the earth in what many describe as a truly unforgettable experience.

With more than 120 ethnic tribes in Tanzania, starry-eyed lovers are also drawn to the nation’s unique culture. The largest ethnic groups include the Sukuma Chagga, Haya, and Nyamwezi and all these tribes are united by use of Swahili or Kiswahili - a coastal Bantu language with Arabic influence.

Despite honeymooners opting for more adventurous getaways, a more traditional relaxing break is still on the agenda for some, with just over one in 10 choosing the Maldives as an ideal honeymoon location. 13% of couples quizzed also admitted looking to Hawaii to kick back after the stresses of organising a wedding.

Interestingly, Madagascar helped complete the top five destinations, another African nation famed for its adventure and astonishing landscapes, including the renowned Isalo National Park.
