The Canary Islands have a unique status in Europe: Even though they are a part of Spain in political matters, they're technically African when it comes to geography. The beautiful archipelago is situated only 70 miles off the African coast and consists of seven islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro.

As you may have heard in the news, a volcano began breaking out just a few weeks ago on La Palma – the entire archipelago shows volcanic activity. It's still safe to go there. The last eruption before the one of El Cumbre Vieja on La Palma took place in 2011 and underwater. Due to their stunning landscapes and African heat, the Canaries are a popular holiday destination.

These are the islands you shouldn't miss out on:

Tenerife

Tenerife is most popular with tourists. The island holds many holiday resorts right at the coast and attracts visitors with its laid-back lifestyle. To get the most out of your holiday on the island, we recommend checking out the best rentals in Tenerife and find the holiday accommodation that suits you best.

You can find a great selection of holiday homes here: https://www.holidu.co.uk/holiday-lettings/spain/tenerife. Small and functional, centrally located, in the backcountry, or spacious and furnished with a private pool – you choose.

Tenerife has its own volcano, too, Pico del Teide, which is dormant and constitutes the highest summit on Spanish territory. The volcanic landscape holds many wonderful hiking routes for tourists and offers stunning views over the sea or the island itself. Visitors should make sure to also spend some time in the vibrant towns of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristobal de Tenerife. The Costa Adeje in the southwest of the island awaits you with perfect beaches.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria – the Grand Canary, a name that’s quite misleading. Tenerife is the biggest Canary, followed by Fuerteventura. Gran Canaria is number three in size of the archipelago. But that doesn’t influence its attractiveness unfavourably at all. To some visitors, Gran Canaria is the most unique island of the archipelago.

The most striking part about its unique landscapes is possibly the black volcanic rocks and lava stones in contrast to the white beaches. Gran Canaria knows how to mingle the raw roughness and force of nature with the soft movement of the waves. On a trip to Gran Canaria, you should make sure to visit Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the vibrant Playa del Inglés and the town of Puerto Rico.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is Spanish and means “strong winds”. And there are indeed strong winds blowing over the archipelago and, due to its location, particularly over Fuerteventura. And the wind is exactly what the island is popular for: Seeing that the weather on the Canary Islands is very hot due to its proximity to Africa, the cooling winds of Fuerteventura are natural air conditioning.

Just like the other Canaries, Fuerteventura offers volcanic rocks and mountainous areas, along with stunning beaches of white sands and turquoise water. Thanks to the winds, Fuerteventura is also very popular with water sports enthusiasts: Surfers love the perfect waves that the island lures them with. Don’t miss out on visiting Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo up North and the national park of Cuchillos de Vigán.

Island Hopping

Travel enthusiasts, who can spend a few weeks exploring the Canaries, should consider island hopping and discovering island after island. As not everybody has got as much time and money, it can be a good idea to spend each holiday on a different island. Most visitors become addicted to the unique landscapes of the Canary Islands and return every year.

Travelling abroad has been rather complicated during the first years of the pandemic, which is why many people stayed within the UK. A trip to the Canary Islands could be a wonderful way of enjoying the regained freedom and of exploring a real gem.
