New Year, new era for public health says County Council

Now is the time when people start to feel the effects of Christmas excesses, and resolve to live healthier, fitter and more active lives; give up smoking or reduce their alcohol intake. And with just three months to go before the County Council takes on the responsibility for improving the health of Devon’s communities, Devon’s Director of Public Health and Devon County Council’s lead for health and wellbeing are making New Year’s resolutions of their own.

Successful Stoptober sees 15% increase in quitters

A month-long national campaign has seen a sharp rise in the number of Devon smokers quitting, early figures have revealed.

Early indications for the second part of the year, which includes the Stoptober campaign run by NHS Devon and Devon County Council as part of a national quit smoking attempt, show a 15% increase in the number of people stopping smoking.

And the increase has been across a wide age range. 25% of the increase was for those in the age category 18-34. Figures also show the increase is more marked in men than women.

The month-long campaign included a...

Here is a quick guide on how hormones impact on our health, well being and body composition. At this time of year a lot of us want to lose a bit of christmas chub and often the first thing we consider is the old addage - 'move more and eat less'. This 'calories in verses calories out' approach is only a very small part of a successful plan for health and fat loss and in fact is not the best approach!

It is the actions of our hormones and neurotransmitters that have the greatest impact on leaness and health. It is not rocket science though, if it was I certainly would not be able to...

  1. Genetics . Some people are more susceptible to storing fat than others. This does not mean that these folks have to carry excess fat, just that they will find it more difficult to strip it off than others. More difficult, but certainly not
