Plymouth Hospitals Trust has been praised by the National Deaf Children’s Society after it received a prestigious accreditation for its children and adult audiology services last week.

This means that all children’s audiology services across Devon and Cornwall are now accredited, and are among the best services in the country for deaf children and their families. Alzheimer’s Society’s Exeter Singing for the Brain group recently celebrated its 5th birthday.

The group celebrated this milestone with a birthday cake and a joyful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ led by singing leader Jacky Forbes.

The group, for people with dementia and carers, meets regularly on the first and third Thursday afternoon of every month at St James’ Church Hall in Exeter.

Research at the University of Exeter designed to help identify patients with dementia and reduce the pressure on health services has received a generous boost of £120,000 from the Halpin Trust.

People aged over 60 who suffer minor memory problems are needed for a new study at the University of Exeter.

Memory decline is common as people age and – although it usually isn’t a sign of serious medical issues – many people find it stressful and worrying.

Exeter researchers are trying to understand the factors that influence whether people experience worry or distress when they have memory lapses.

The results could help identify ways to help people who experience lapses but do not have a diagnosable memory impairment.

Mental health workshops for Sidmouth residents

A series of mental health workshops are being held by East Devon District Council in Sidmouth to help young people, parents and working professionals have a better understanding of mental illness and to educate them on the issues surrounding it.

The RD&E is to extend the temporary suspension of birth services at Honiton and Okehampton birth centres for a further three months.

Good progress has been made to recruit staff into vacancies within the wider Maternity Service, but ongoing staff sickness and high patient demand in the acute unit in Exeter means we have not yet been able to reach acceptable staffing levels. As a result, the Trust is continuing to suspend birth services at Honiton and Okehampton to ensure patient safety and quality is maintained across our maternity service
