Patients with muscle and nerve conditions attended an event in Exeter to find out more about the practical aspects of living with such a problem and how they could become more independent.

The Independent Living Day, organised by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, was held at the Isca Centre and attracted more than 40 patients and their families from across the county.

The afternoon event featured a wealth of information and advice about the support, activities and equipment available locally.

Patients listened to presentations, saw equipment demonstrations, met local support groups and shared experiences with other people with a neuromuscular condition.

The Independent Living Centre gave a talk about equipment while there were also presentations about wheelchairs, vehicle adaptations, disabled facilities grants, the countryside mobility scheme and local disability sports clubs.

The event was organised by Geri Lavallee, a neuromuscular physiotherapist for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.  Geri is a member of the Trust’s community rehabilitation team in Exeter.
