Skin Angels take sun-safe campaign to food festival

The Skin Angels were out in force at the recent Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink, as they continued their quest to raise awareness of the importance of year round sun protection.

Skin Angels, set up in 2013 by Mariam Badavi from Exeter's Purity Boutique Spa, are on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of protecting skin from the sun, even on a cloudy day and aim to arm young people with knowledge about looking after their skin to prevent and treat skin conditions such as acne.

During the festival Skin Angel’s ambassador, singer and songwriter Charlotte Ward, launched a song in support of the campaign called ‘Cover it up’.

Charlotte said " I've been a Skin Angels ambassador for a while and really wanted to write a song to promote them and the great work they do.  It's the first time I've written a song to a brief and that was quite hard initally but I'm really pleased with the result."

Mariam said: “Charlotte is such a talented singer and I think the Skin Angels song is amazing. I hope it helps to get the message out to young people about looking after their precise skin."

Exeter rugby player Carl Rimmer, another Skin Angels ambassador, was also on hand at the festival to help teach people how to apply sun cream correctly.

Carl said: “I am proud to be supporting the Skin Angels in their campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of the sun. As a rugby player I spend a lot of time outdoors and I know that harmful rays can damage the skin even on a cloudy day.”

The team used special wristbands that turn blue when UVA rays are present, to demonstrate to festival-goers that they need to protect themselves against these harmful rays during day light hours, no matter what the weather is like. They also handed out samples of sun cream and goodies including stickers and frisbees for children.

Skin Angels will be out and about throughout 2014 visiting schools, colleges and other events across Devon.

The UK charity, Teenage Cancer Trust, is backing Mariam in her efforts.
