Food Reader Awards 2015 finalists

The shortlist for the Food Reader Awards 2015 has been announced and Exeter is harbouring a wealth of foodie finalists.

Darts Farm, Boston Tea Party, Chandos Deli and Michael Caines have all been nominated and voted for by Food Magazine readers in their hundreds, and luckily there’ll be no neighbourly competition as all of Exeter’s finalists will be representing the city in different categories.

Exeter’s own Michael Caines will be up against stiff competition from other popular South West chefs including Mitch Tonks and Nathan Outlaw in the Local Food Hero category....

Jamie’s Italian opening date revealed

Jamie’s Italian will officially open on Monday 2 February 2015 at noon in Princesshay.

The restaurant is the first Jamie's Italian to open in the West Country.

Jamie Oliver’s Italian mentor and celebrity chef, Gennaro Contaldo will be welcoming guests to the restaurant on Tuesday 3 February, the day after the official opening. The Italian legend is said to have taught Jamie Oliver everything he knows about Italian food.

Boys cook up a logo for food sessions at youth club

Just before Christmas, three boys from the SWITCH youth club, run by East Devon District Council community development workers, came into the council offices at Knowle to work on their winning logo design with a professional graphic artist – and to collect their prizes.

The logo is for a joint partnership project where HALFF – a food charity based in Axminster – have been encouraging the young people to work together, cooking food from scratch. They will also be creating their own recipes and turning them into a book.

The name they came up with for the project is FOODtastic...

Counterfeit vodka warning

Businesses and consumers are being warned to be on the look out for counterfeit Smirnoff vodka which could potentially pose health risks.

Trading Standards has discovered that the fake spirits have been sold in the Weston-Super-Mare area. Concerns were raised after the complainant reported that a batch of the vodka sold to a nightclub had a hint of an acetone or nail varnish smell.

Initial examinations found problems with the labelling and, following a sample analysis by Trading Standards officers, the contaminated bottles were found to contain industrial solvents, possibly...

Exeter Street Food will be hosting The Christmas Street Food Party at The Quay, Exeter on Tuesday 23 December between 5.30pm and 9.30pm, celebrating the finale of it’s street food events in 2014.

The Rusty Pig in Ottery St Mary is hosting a festive Christmas Jumper fundraising feast for pre-Christmas revellers.

Diners joining the fun on Friday 19th December will be obliged to wear a jumper festooned with a seasonal motif or decoration, although chef Robin Rea believes some will go the extra mile.

“I’m sure we’ll be seeing some extra special efforts from creative Rusty Pig diners,” he said.

Robin will choose his favourite jumper on the night, and the wearer will enjoy their meal for free.

Bumper honey crop from SW bees

Beekeepers across the South West of England have reported an average yield of 30lbs of honey per colony this year according to the findings of the British Beekeepers Association¹s annual Honey Survey, released today (26 November, 2014).

The survey revealed a substantial 36 per cent increase on the 22lbs per colony reported by South West of England beekeepers in 2013, and is a far cry from the 7lbs per colony nadir of 2012.

The reported yield across the country is 32lbs per colony, a 28 per cent increase on the 25lbs per colony reported in 2013.
