Organisers of the Devon County Show are putting the last minute touches to the county’s largest annual event which opens on Thursday (May 21-23) at Westpoint, Exeter. Devon farmers will be out in force next Thursday, May 21, for the opening of the county’s premier agricultural showpiece, the Devon County Show, which this year’s celebrates its 120th show.

Described by James Martin on Saturday Kitchen as “the best bought ice cream available”, Simply Ice Cream will be reduced by 20% in Waitrose Exeter during May.

An unusual outside mobile catering service made its debut at the recent Honiton Sausage and Cider Festival.

And despite the rain that fell over the weekend, the Rusty Pig’s ethically produced sausages and wood-fired pulled pork cooked in a converted cattle trailer went down a storm with festivalgoers.

New cooking courses at Trill Farm

The Trill Trust, the educational charity based at Trill Farm, in Axminster has just added five new one-day cookery and butchery courses to its programme this year, each one with distinct focus on preparing seasonally available produce from the farm: Trill Summer Tapas, Summer BBQ Cooking Class, Fermenting and Preserving, Lamb Butchery, and Trill’s Garden Christmas.

Eight business people from around Exeter took part in the Kirk Hills Omelette Challenge, the second year that it’s run at the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink.

The Challenge was judged by Michael Caines MBE who showed the contestants how it should be done with a time of 28 seconds. Paul Nero from Radio Exe was compere for the event.

Keith Biggs from OTB Eveling was defending champion and looked like he would win again this year with the best time in the initial round. However there was an ‘egg off’ between Keith and the second fastest Chris Bentley from Exeter...

Chef Robin Rea from Ottery’s award-winning Rusty Pig has put together a special festival meal box for the Honiton Sausage & Cider Festival at the Honiton Showground on May 1 and 2.

The feast includes a Rusty Pig homemade saveloy and blood pudding, with green sauce and pease pudding.

“We’re really looking forward to supporting the festival this year as traders, and I wanted to make something a bit different for festival-goers to enjoy,” explained Robin.

Robin signed up for the festival after choosing the Devon Freewheelers as his charity of the year for 2015....
