Cracking crab wins top accolade

FAMILY fishing firm Favis of Salcombe are celebrating after their crab meat was voted Supreme Champion Product in the Taste of the West Awards 2015.

The prestigious accolade was given to them after judges described their white crab meat as “outstandingly high quality.”

Favis of Salcombe have been sustainably fishing crab and lobster off South Devon since 1972. Last year they branched out into cooking and handpicking crab at their factory just outside Kingsbridge, before distributing it to some of the finest chefs and restaurants in the UK.

Volunteers wanted for MoodFood trial

Researchers from the University of Exeter are seeking participants for a trial into whether certain types of food could prevent depression.

Experiencing depression often goes hand in hand with being overweight. The MoodFood trial will compare different nutritional and lifestyle strategies that might change mood and wellbeing in people with a higher than average body mass index (BMI).

Volunteers must be overweight with a BMI of 25 - 40 and be feeling low or stressed. They must live in or near Exeter, be aged 18-75 and be willing to participate in lifestyle coaching,...

Food & Drink Devon Awards shortlist announced

After months of blind tasting, deliberation and judging, the shortlist of finalists for the 2015 Food & Drink Devon Awards have been announced, with the winners revealed at a ceremony in Exeter on Monday 5th October. Entries from across the county included 144 products, 38 producers, 41 hospitality and 6 retail establishments judged by experts from the industry.

This week my dining companion and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the launch of the new menu at Bella Italia in Queen Street, Exeter. I was particularly excited about this having enjoyed my precious visit so much.

Killerton Estate has won four national awards for its local produce in the Fine Farm Produce Awards which recognise the quality and sustainability of the food, drink and produce grown on National Trust land and farms.
