Beehive products used 8,500 years ago

Humans have been exploiting bees as far back as the Stone Age, according to new collaborative research involving the University of Exeter that is published in Nature today.

Previous evidence from prehistoric rock art is inferred to show honey hunters and Pharaonic Egyptian murals show early scenes of beekeeping. However, the close association between early farmers and the honeybee remained uncertain.

This study has gathered together evidence for the presence of beeswax in the pottery vessels of the first farmers of Europe by investigating chemical components trapped in the...

One of the most brilliant things about Exeter is its openness to vegetarians and vegans. Now, I’m not saying it’s completely open and there are no harsh judgements, however in comparison to some of the other cities in the UK that I’ve visited, Exeter is far from the worst.

In fact, there’s a lovely little vegetarian and vegan café in the Cathedral yard called The Plant Café. I visited there once before for a chai latte and a slice of carrot cake but was keen to return and try the famous vegan chocolate cake. I should make this clear now, I’m a vegetarian, not vegan, yet was eager...

How to make barista style coffee at home, from the experts

As a nation that claims to be coffee lovers – it’s surprising to reveal that we can be clueless when it comes to making the perfect cup, with many of us favouring a simple spoonful of Gold Blend and boiling water in order to get a caffeine hit.

Around 8 in 10 people regularly drink coffee, according to a new survey of 2,000 UK adults. This is evenly split between men and women – with 78 per cent of women, and 80 per cent of men admitting that they can’t function without a cup. Although it appears to be far more popular with those over 55, rather than those under 24 – that’s 31...
