The new assistant manager at Rusty Pig in Ottery St Mary won’t be tucking into the restaurant’s pork chops any time soon.

Although the ethical restaurant is well known for its meat dishes, Sarah Davison is a strict vegetarian.

She joined the team after finishing her degree in Anthropology at Exeter University, which included Food Studies. The course included a module on the theory and methods of traditional food presentation which found her attending a session on butchery and charcuterie at Rusty Pig.

From traditional fare to the most creative – there was something for everyone to taste and buy at Honiton Gate to Plate on Saturday (September 28) as around 50 fine food, drink and craft producers were joined by top chefs, food experts and talented entertainers.

The finalists for this year’s South West Chef of the Year competition have been chosen and now face the final round where they will be cooking for judges on the 22nd October at Exeter College.

The finalists in the Professional and Young Professional categories will cook a three-course menu using ingredients supplied by the competition’s sponsors. They are given only one week’s notice about the meat or fish they will be using and just 30 minutes for all the other ingredients.
