Exeter bakers face fresh competition as premium retailers hit the high street.

From next week, the Tesco Metro in the city centre will stock Krispy Kreme doughnuts in an in-store cabinet.

The new self-service cabinets will offer customers more than 12 varieties of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, freshly baked in Bristol that morning.

Both the Tesco Metro and the Exeter Vale Tesco Extra will open self-service cabinets next Wednesday (18 September).

Krispy Kreme UK now has over 400 doughnut cabinets across the UK as well as 52 dedicated stores.

The new cabinets don’t concern Linda Parsons from Shauls Bakery, one of several independent bakers in Exeter.

Linda said: “Our doughnuts are made fresh every day in our bakery in Marsh Barton.

“We’ve been in business for over 50 years, so we must be doing something right.”

Shauls has been in business in Exeter since 1961 and has recently moved to Exeter Guildhall from South Street.

Judith Denby, Chief Marketing Officer at Krispy Kreme UK, commented: “We are excited to be launching into a new area and we’re looking forward to seeing the reaction to our doughnuts from the people of Exeter.”
