Students and staff at Tiverton High School are attempting to beat the world record for the biggest ever cream tea.

They’re planning on hosting 500 guests to a proper cream tea on Wednesday and they’ll be making sure that the scones are served Devon-style with the cream going on first.

The school needs to feed more than 430 people to break the current world record for the biggest cream tea. They are inviting pupils from local primary schools, their own students and staff and special guests from the community.

It’s the brainchild of staff members Kirsty Pritchard and Mandy Slevin and follows on from a Scottish food tasting they put on for St Andrew’s Day last year.

Kirsty said: “We managed, with lots of donations, to feed over 350 pupils and staff during lunch with haggis, neeps and tatties.

“We thought we’d do a big cream tea for St George’s Day but we postponed it when we decided to go for the world record.

“Thanks to some wonderful support from lots of local and national companies which have donated the food free of charge, we will be aiming to feed 500 people on Wednesday (12 June).

Local county councillor Polly Colthorpe is supporting the world record attempt. She said: “Recently a scientist claimed to have resolved the great ‘cream first or jam’ dilemma in favour of the Cornish way with jam first.

“Of course everyone in Devon knows that you put the cream on first and that’s the way we’ll be serving the scones next Wednesday.”
