We've all stuck our children's drawings on pin boards, on the wall and even on the fridge, but inevitably they end up dog-eared and stained and slowly walking to the bin.

Now, thanks to Westcountry company Plantabox, tatty remnants of your children's art work can be a thing of the past.

The Devon-based company makes personalised crates for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. This year the company has cracked the personalisation market by printing children's drawings on the side of apple crates – just in time for Father's Day (Sunday June 16).

The process is...

WILDLIFE CAFE

The Newtown Community Association cafe on Sunday 12 May will be partnered by the Devon Wildlife Trust. The event, open from 2pm-4pm, will include DWT Terrestrial Conservation Officer Emily Stallworthy who will have a stand with information on wildlife gardening, the bumblebee campaign and what they hope to do in Newtown.

There may also be an opportunity to make seed bombs! It's a great activity to do with children, they can get a bit messy (and adults as well!) and then take the seed bomb home to plant in the garden.

Football fun in the sun this half term with Exeter City

Exeter City’s Football in the Community Trust is once again running a full programme of popular children’s football roadshows during the May half term, following the success of the Easter events which were attended by around 500 children from across the region.

There will be three different events in Exeter, plus courses in Dawlish, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Crediton, Tiverton, Seaton, Feniton, Okehampton, North Tawton and Barnstaple.

A two-day course on the astroturf at St Luke’s Science and Sports College kicks off half term, starting on Tuesday 28 May and costing £27 for the...

Rise and shine with the Dawn Chorus!

Early risers can’t fail to notice that it’s that time of year again – birds are looking for mates, or defending their breeding territory and the dawn chorus is at its best.

Also, with the promise of David Attenborough’s launch of ‘Tweet for the Day’ on Radio 4 in May, and International Dawn Chorus Day on Sunday 5 May, bird song is definitely flavour of the month!

Come down to the Axe Estuary Wetlands on 11 May for the Dawn Chorus Walk from 5am-7am. This will be led by Steve Waite, County Recorder for Devon Birds www.devonbirds.org – don’t miss this opportunity to learn...

Find out if fostering is for you: events in Exeter and East Devon

A series of special events for anyone interested in fostering continue next month, as Devon County Council continues its drive to recruit carers.

The Council is hosting a mixture of information events and stalls in a bid to encourage more people to consider becoming foster families and give those interested the chance to find out whether fostering would be suitable for them.

Devon has over 700 children in care, and just over 300 fostering households. However many current foster carers are approaching retirement age so the County Council needs to recruit new carers.

If you go down to the woods in May...

After what has seemed like months of cold winds and driving rain, weather forecasters are hinting that Spring may be with us in May, at long last.

The message from the Tree Council, the UK’s lead charity for promoting the importance of trees and woodland, is ‘Change your View’ with a Walk in the Woods during May.

It’s time to stop burying ourselves in winter woollies. May is the time to look up and see what’s happening around us; the sap is rising, buds are bursting, days are lengthening and soon our woodlands will be alive with wild flowers and creatures coming out of...

Devon adds its voice to MMR campaign

Devon’s Director of Public Health is urging parents to ensure their children have had their MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccinations, following a measles outbreak in Wales.

Dr Virginia Pearson’s message is part of a national joint campaign between the Association for Directors of Public Health, Public Health England – the government organisation responsible for immunisation; and the Local Government Association, to increase take-up of the vaccine in children and teenagers, following the recent outbreak in some parts of the UK.

Dr Pearson said: “Generally across Devon...

Devon County Show starts to take shape

Preparation has started on the build for this year's Devon County Show on 16-18 May. A team of eight contractors are making the showground home for the next month as they build marquees equivalent in size to approximately four football pitches. Show Secretary Ollie Allen said the early days of the build were a testing time for the team. “This is a really big task!” she said. “In marquee-building terms, it’s equivalent to scaling Mount Everest! “Each year, Danco, the marquee contractors, put in some new recruits with the more established staff members and within weeks, sometimes days, it is...
