An unlikely combination of football and craft have provided the inspiration for Souvenirs from Home, an exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

Gilded football boots and decorated silk team shirts are amongst the craft created by football supporters working with artists across the country. Souvenirs from Home is the culmination of Home Ground, a three-year project which celebrates the cultural heritage of football clubs with nicknames inspired by the local craft industries that have shaped their communities. Devon is a fantastic place to live, but how many local residents look up to the hilly bit in the middle of the county and admit that they don’t really know much about Dartmoor National Park?

Following last year’s critically acclaimed sold out run, Orange Tree Theatre and English Touring Theatre in association with Exeter Northcott Theatre present French Without Tears, the sparkling comedy by Terence Rattigan at the Exeter Northcott, 16-24 September.

Starting Saturday 10 September, visitor’s to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery can explore changing Southwest landscapes in an exhibition featuring works by J.M.W. Turner, one of Britain’s greatest landscape painters, and contemporary British artist Kurt Jackson.

Climbing event hits new peak

Elite climbers from across the globe descended – or should that be ascended – on Exeter this weekend.

They were taking part in the Quay Climbing Centre’s Deep Water Solo event, which sees a seven-metre wall built into the canal basin. Competitors climb without ropes and drop in to the canal when they lose their grip.

And there were also some familiar local faces who were trying their hand at the sport for the first time.

Historic home to open to public for first time

One of Devon’s hidden gems will be open to the public for the first time in its 250-year history as part of a national heritage event.

Newly refurbished Rockbeare Manor, just outside Exeter, will open its historically important grounds and Grade I listed house from noon until 4pm on Sunday, September 11, as part of the 2016 National Heritage Open Day.
