The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

English Touring Opera: King Priam

Troy is under siege. In the city, the old King recounts the events leading up to the war, waiting for his own death. All the familiar characters and stories – Hector and Achilles, Paris, Helen and the gods – are brought to life in this memorable meditation on the futility of war. Sung in English. English Touring Opera: The Twelve Songs Of Emily Dickinson

As part of English Touring Opera’s annual Spring visit to Exeter, singer Caryl Hughes and pianist Harry Ogg perform this lunchtime performance, featuring all twelve of Copland’s songs as well as readings of other poems from Dickinson’s collected works.  Tickets £8. www.bikeshedtheatre.co.uk

Museums After Dark: Bhangra Extravaganza
Friday, 8pm, RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
Museums across the country open their doors for the public to experience the magic of museums after dark. At RAMM there is a special evening of Bhangra music and dance. RSVP will play, the UK’s favourite Bhangra band.  It’s a fully interactive experience with traditional Indian dancing lessons alongside the music. Exeter Philharmonic Choir: Bach B Minor Mass

100% Zappa: Ike Willis & Zappatika

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

On stage and in the studio, Jon Spencer has destroyed and rebuilt American roots music with such ferocity and wild abandon,  that it’s hard to believe there is anything left. It’s been 20 years since The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion first pressed ‘record’, and twenty years since Spencer and his A-Team of sonic terrorists tore up the indie-rock landscape with fever and a visceral, untouchable vision of rock and roll that did for a new wave of blues-punk primitivists what Helen of Troy’s face did for the armada. Exmouth Carnival Spring Fun Day

A fun day out for all the family between. Between 9am and 5pm you’ll find over 50 stalls selling handmade crafts and jewellery, toys, cup cakes and more. There will be face painting, a bouncy castle, children’s entertainer, birds of prey, dance sessions, music, majorette displays and of course the crowning of this year’s carnival royalty.

Pond Dipping with Going Wildwards

EXHIBITIONS

Mathew Sawyer Exhibition and music event
Saturday, 4pm, Spacex Gallery, Preston Street, Exeter
Visual artist and musician Mathew Sawyer will be performing and showcasing his work as part of White Male, 36 Years Old, Average Height, No Pets, Out of Shape and Anxious. His work will be available to view from Saturday 17 May up until Saturday 12 July. Artist Rooms: Gilbert & George

Anne Deeming
Exeter Phoenix
A new, site specific, sculptural installation by Anne Deeming who designs and makes objects that look familiar and usable in some way – and yet are not. Her works exist as amalgamations of everyday utilitarian objects with features that can trigger multiple associations with something the viewer has used or seen before. She is interested in the areas of slippage between the familiar and foreign, domestic and industrial, the useful and useless. By examining the role that expectation and memory plays in our reading and understanding of objects, the pieces articulate an, often subconscious, relationship with the items we surround ourselves with.
