The Exeter Picturehouse launches a special season commemorating the outbreak of World War One, on Monday 4 August, with A Night at the Cinema in 1914.

This newly scored compilation of short films from the BFI Archive reconstructs a typical cinema programme of the era.

Topical and newsreel items sit alongside an entertaining range of lighter comedy and drama, including an episode of the legendary serial The Perils of Pauline, and a rather fantastical early outing for Charlie Chaplin.

The season continues into the autumn in the Vintage Sundays strand, with a new restoration of Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed Paths of Glory showing on 7 September, and a rare outing for the first ever Best Picture Oscar winner, Wings, on 5 October.

The season rounds off with a very special archive screening on Remembrance Sunday. The title is top secret at the moment – but save the date in your diary! Full details will be announced in late summer.

Book by calling 0871 902 5730, on line at www.picturehouses.co.uk or in person at the cinema.
