It’s fair to say that Australian born actor Jai Courtney has come a long way since studying at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. This has seen him make the leap from a promising young talent to bona fide Hollywood star.

As a result of this success, he has been a standout feature in many hit TV shows/movies in recent years and emerged as a favourite of UK audiences. In particular, he’s been a notable presence in action-based productions and playing ambiguous/villainous roles. This is not a surprise when you combine his magnetic personality on screen with his acting skills.

But what have been some of the most successful films and TV series he’s featured in?

Suicide Squad movies

In the world of entertainment, major brands can intertwine to superb effect. This is easy to see in UK gaming, where developers create branded slingo titles or branded slots based on hit TV shows. The same idea often sees hit films based on comic books and this is true for the ‘Suicide Squad’ movies.

2016’s ‘Suicide Suad’ and 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ saw Courtney becoming part of the extended DC comics universe. In both movies, he plays Captain Boomerang and drew largely positive praise for his performances.

The first film was directed by David Ayers and was a huge commercial success – taking around $747 million at the box office globally. Courtney’s presence in the film was a major part of this success and resonated with audiences. He was able to bring out the rugged, streetwise side of the character and helped make Captain Boomerang one of the most popular on screen.

Coming out in 2021 ‘The Suicide Squad’ saw Courtney reprise his role as Captain Boomerang to superb effect. Although he maybe didn’t get quite as much screen time as hoped from director James Gunn, he made the most of it and left a lasting impression on watching fans. This was another hit movie from the DC universe and is still one of Courtney’s most famous.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Everyone loves catching the latest TV shows and biggest small screen hits. 2010’s ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ sums up why and was a major hit when launched.

It was also a big moment in the actor’s career and helped establish him as an up-and-coming talent globally. He played Varro across 10 episodes, and the role enabled him to showcase not only his screen presence but also his ability to convincingly deliver dialogue.

Varro is a Roman citizen who sold himself to the ludus to support his family and ends up befriending Spartacus in the show. This type of role was ideal for allowing Courtney to deliver an emotionally impactful performance which audiences truly believed.

The show itself was a major success and a hit with the critics. Although the actor was only part of this for Season 1, he made major waves in this time.

Divergent

The Divergent series of movies is based on the 2011 novel from Veronica Roth. Although there are three films in the franchise which grossed around $765 million globally, it’s the first Divergent film in 2014 which had the most impact.

Courtney’s character of Eric Coulter is the leader of the Dauntless faction in the film and a ruthless, tough hombre. He’s a key protagonist across all the Divergent flicks and especially prominent in this first one. Courtney is able to really embody the fierce nature of his character in this movie and showcase his wide-ranging acting talents.

The Terminal List

2022’s ‘The Terminal List’ saw Jai Courtney moving back to TV work and starring as Steve Horn. The show itself is an Amazon Prime production and turned out to be a massive hit with streaming fans.

The series proved to be an action-packed thriller which also featured Chris Pratt as an avenging Navy seal. Courtney’s character is the shady CEO of Capstone Industries and someone who plays an increasingly pivotal role in how the story unfolds.

Praised for its intense action, strong narrative and high production values, Courtney’s scene-stealing appearances were also a highlight. It once again shows just how comfortable he is bringing a dark charisma to more villainous roles.

Jai Courtney’s biggest TV shows and movies

This Australian actor is someone with a big following in the UK and also a massive fanbase worldwide. Although he’s starred in many well-received films and TV series over time, those shown above are some of the most iconic.
