There might be many times in life when we would like to have some sweet revenge. Harlequin and fellow slave Cleanthis are presented with the perfect opportunity, when they are shipwrecked with their master and mistress on the Isle of Slaves.

The Island regime, run by escaped slaves, dictates that all former masters and mistresses must change places with their unfortunate slaves and take their turn to feel for themselves slavery’s impact.

The Slaves now have their turn to behave as ‘gentry’ and lord it over their former tormentors.  How will they behave when the tables are turned?  Is revenge sweeter than forgiveness and harmony?  What would society be like if everyone in positions of power had to obey that rule?

Pierre de Marivaux 1688 –1763, one of France’s most important playwrights, wrote many comedies for the Parisian scene, as well as being a novelist and journalist.  A keen observer of life’s quirks, his plays act out his thought-experiments arising from his social observations, not only providing many comic possibilities but also giving much food for thought.

In his new adaptation, Alistair Ganley directs the Cygnet Company with beautiful costumes, in an eclectic mix of music and physical comedy, that will be fun for all the family.

The Isle of Slaves can be seen at Cygnet Theatre from 3rd-7th July at 7.30pm and 3.00pm on Saturday 7th July, and then on tour to garden venues all over Devon.

Why not choose a venue near you, bring a picnic, rugs and chairs and settle down for an evening of fun and mayhem. It may not turn the world upside down, or will it?
