Being surrounded by technology most of the time has a lot of us craving the good old days of human connection and a vacation from phones and the Internet. What we used to do on a night with friends or family, before streaming services, was to host a wholesome game night!

That’s not to say that your favorite bits of technology won't make it into the evening. Kids these days are all about playing games via their phones, which the whole family or a whole party can get involved in. But if you want to go back to basics with your game night, that’s still just as doable.

Before you go all out and start choosing games and inviting friends, ask yourself what you would want in a game night. There has to be more than just games to keep people interested! In fact, you can turn your game night into a soiree that your guests will be talking about long after the dice’s last roll.

For a list of how to plan not only a game night, but the perfect one, look no further than this checklist.

Who to Invite?

It’s worth it to plan exactly whom to have at your game night, as personalities can clash with so much competition involved. Game nights are also usually done best when with a smaller group of people, but too small and you could miss out on some of the best games! Make sure you invite those you think will be good sports and more importantly, fun to play with. Challenging yourself and your friends is always a plus, so don’t be scared to be in a room with some other knowledgeable and creative people. That will only make the process and the win more enjoyable!

What kind of game are we playing?

You can go back to basics with some staples like charades, Scrabble, Boggle, and Clue, but there are so many games out there to be played!

Don’t underestimate the draw of roleplaying games as well -- something like a murder mystery (with costumes!) could be an excellent way of showing your party planning skills in the long run. There are also a ton of other roleplaying games that last a while and can be played with many people (Dungeons and Dragons anyone?). Something like Settlers of Catan can illuminate who is the thriftiest amongst you.

If you’re feeling extra creative, try creating your own game for a change! This is an activity you can do with your party that they won’t soon forget.

Don’t forget the sustenance

What will keep your game night going, especially during a long game, are food and drinks. You can make these themed to reflect the games you’re playing (butterbeer and chocolate frogs for any Harry Potter related gaming), or you can just make sure to have a whole lot of them.
