Tiverton will be the venue for a rare evening of hilarious stand-up comedy by renowned writer, classicist and broadcaster Natalie Haynes, featuring some of ancient history’s funniest and most bizarre stories. But it’s only happening due to the persistence and persuasive powers of a Tiverton pupil as, despite having had five sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Natalie has retired from her career as a stand-up comedian.

Having read Natalie’s book ‘The Ancient Guide to Modern Life’ and heard her standing up for the classics on Radio 4, Harriet Nash – who is currently studying A levels at Blundell’s School and lives in the town – was determined to bring Natalie to Devon. But she was incredibly hard to contact and Harriet spent weeks being passed around agents and publishers until she eventually managed to get in touch with Natalie herself.

Harriet’s interest and in-depth knowledge of the book persuaded Natalie to make a rare return to comedy – and she’ll be appearing at Blundell’s on Wednesday 2 November 7pm in an event that’s open to all aged 16+. Tickets are £5, available from the school office on 01884 252543 or by emailing h.vincent@blundells.org

The evening with Natalie Haynes is just one event of a number taking place at Blundell’s which anyone who buys a ticket can attend.  There’s also a Call My Bluff Antiques Roadshow on Friday 4 November when people can compete to demonstrate that they can tell Ming from bling under the watchful eye of experts. This event is in aid of the school’s Laos project which is fundraising to buy an elephant that can be used to take supplies to remote village along the Mekong River. Tickets are £10 including supper from the school office.

Another charity event at the school, this time in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society, is a charity wine tasting in conjunction with The Jolly Vintner, giving adults the chance to sample fine wines from around the world.  This takes place on Thursday 10 November at 7pm, tickets £8 available from the school office or The Jolly Vintner on 01884 255644.

More details of all Blundell’s events can be seen on the school website www.blundells.org
