On Thursday 17th June, Powderham Castle welcomed members of Teignmouth Art Society for the beginning of their summer sketching season.

This year, the event drew a record number of artists on the day, with 25 members attending. This included a mix of novice and experienced artists, with many taking inspiration from Powderham’s deer park.

The magical setting of Powderham Castle is a firm favourite with Teignmouth Art Society, who have visited Powderham at the start of their season for a number of years.

Des Maxwell Clark, Vice-Chairman of Teignmouth Art Society commented: "Thank you Powderham for making us so welcome and providing such a dramatic and scenic location.

"Some who came were experienced artists but many were new members who had not been to Powderham before. Everyone found inspiring subject matter and many chose to study the East side of the Castle, the rose garden and the view across the deer park towards the Exe Estuary. Both the architecture of the castle and the wonderful specimen trees provided challenges and inspiration."

Teignmouth Art Society is one of the largest in the country with over 180 members and has been established since 1948. It is fitting that such a great working relationship has been built with Powderham Castle whom also boast a long association with the art world. Visitors to Powderham can marvel at the Thomas Hudson painting in the State Dining Room, as well as the spectacular painting of Lucy, Harriet and Caroline, daughters of the 2nd Viscount Powderham, by renowned artist, Richard Cosway, located in the First Library.

Ingrid Oram, Visitor Attraction Manager for Powderham Castle, commented: "It’s always a pleasure to welcome Teignmouth Art Society to Powderham. The Castle is a wonderful place to draw artistic inspiration and with such a long history with the art world, we feel it’s fitting that Powderham has such a strong relationship with local artists".

Teignmouth Art Society’s next exhibition will be mid-August in Shaldon.

Powderham Castle and grounds are open to visitors until 31st October 2016, Sunday to Friday 11.00am to 4.30pm. The Castle is closed on Saturdays but will open on Saturday 27th August.
