Pride and Celebration: Isca Academy Hosts Civic Awards for Local Young Changemakers

Young people from across Devon were recognised for their commitment to citizenship, leadership and community service at a special Torbay and Devon Civic Award ceremony held at Isca Academy this month.

The event, which celebrates the achievements of Year 6 pupils who have gone above and beyond in helping others, brought together proud students, families, and staff from schools across the region to acknowledge months of voluntary service and personal growth.

Exeter schoolboy reaches Bananagrams Challenge live final

Eleven-year-old Taylor Murphy of Whipton Barton Junior School in Exeter has beaten almost 25,000 other UK primary school children to win a place in the live Grand Final of The BANANAGRAMS Challenge.

After triumphing over his classmates in the first stage of the free-to-enter national tournament earlier this year, Taylor’s impressive word skills in the online rounds secured him one of just 12 coveted places at the Final, which will see the UK’s Top Banana crowned on 30 April 2016.

Exeter School teacher prepares for London Marathon

An Exeter School PE teacher is preparing for the London Marathon in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Hannah Rhodes chose to raise money for the charity as she has a number of close friends who suffer from diabetes.

A primary school teacher from Devon has launched an app 'Fonics' designed to help 3-6 year olds learn how to read more effectively. The app is free and is available to download now across all major app stores.

Devon in top 10 per cent of councils for cutting truancy

Devon has some of the lowest figures in the country for the amount of children who are persistently absent from school.

New Government figures show that Devon County Council is in the top 10 per cent of local authorities for its low absence.

Of 150 local councils responsible for education in England, only 13 have better figures than Devon.

The amount of children who miss 15 per cent or more of school time stands at 2.9 per cent in Devon.

In the South West and in England overall, the figure is 3.7 per cent.

For some of us sitting and scrolling through Facebook or playing the latest game on our tablet is something that we do not think twice about. But for people with sight or hearing issues it makes using technology somewhat difficult.

Exmouth schoolchildren ride the Avocet Line

Pupils from Marpool Primary School in Exmouth recently took a free train trip on the Avocet Line which links Exmouth and Exeter, to visit Exeter Cathedral as part of their Religious Education studies.
