Bicton College recently announced the launch of the Trefusis Academy, to support students applying to University and managerial roles.

The programme will provide students with the cultural, employability and study skills needed to make the leap from further education into higher level study and employment.

The College has seen a four-fold rise in students applying for much sought after university places in the last academic year – this belies the national trend which has shown a decline in university applications for the second year in a row.

Jenny Tyrrell, Careers Co-ordinator, said:  “We are delighted that our students are continuing to aspire to higher education.   The Trefusis Academy will build support around those students, to ensure they are competing on a level playing field for university places with students coming from the traditional A level route.  Offers of university places are coming in each day for our students, from Sports Coaching and Development, to Animal Behaviour and Tree Surgery.”

Deputy Principal, Jane Townsend added:  “It is absolutely vital that careers advisers, teachers and parents are correctly informed about our vocational qualifications – they do not preclude study at degree or masters level.  Our duty is to inspire and inform our students and enable them to succeed in their academic study.  The Trefusis Academy demonstrates that Bicton is committed to providing this opportunity to our students.”
