WWI replica gospels to inspire Devon school children
Thousands of St John’s Gospels – replicas of the gospel given to all troops as they were sent off to fight in the First World War – are to be given to Devon’s school children as part of centenary commemorations.
The Gospel, complete with some hymns and paintings, was designed to fit in soldier’s top pocket, and to provide comfort and hope in the trenches.
Some 43 million were given away during the war by SGM LIfewords and it has produced the replica gospel to mark this year’s anniversary. In partnership with the mission project Hope 2014, 11,000 copies have been given to the Diocese of Exeter.
The diocese is giving them to children in church schools and asking pupils to share it with someone in their family, or wider community, who has lived through a war and to listen to their experiences and memories.
Philip Mantell, head of education for the diocese, said: “This project isn’t just about giving away a free Gospel, though free access to Bibles is hugely important. It’s about encouraging children to share them, to listen to the personal histories of previous generations who have suffered the realities of war, in a way our generation has not. Today’s children are benefiting from the sacrifices made by their grandparents and great grandparents. We hope the present of this Gospel will bring this reality home.”
Church schools been asked if they would like to take part in the project. Contact education@exeter.anglican.org if your school would like copies.
