Devon Carers at Westbank marks Carers Week with a host of events and a new book to support unpaid carers

Devon Carers at Westbank, the service which currently supports almost 34,000 adult unpaid carers across the county, has lined up a full programme of events throughout Carers Week this June and will be launching a new book for carers called “Give Me A Break”. Produced by local health and wellbeing charity Westbank Community Health and Care, the book is full of hints, tips and ideas to help unpaid carers take time out from their caring role, regardless of whether they can spare fifteen minutes, half an hour or longer.

Accounting for volunteers at the Museum of Dartmoor Life

The Museum of Dartmoor Life has received a much-needed makeover thanks to staff from the Okehampton office of Simpkins Edwards, who took a day off from number crunching to help the local charity.

Inside the museum, a team of six painted the John Young gallery in readiness for the museum’s next exhibition; ‘Floral Wonder’ from the talented children of Okehampton Primary School. Externally, a further team of five weeded the Museum’s courtyard.

Museum Manager Keri Quertier was thrilled with the offer of assistance from the local Chartered Accountancy firm.

Garden centre team ready to 'Race for Life'

A team of four from Otter Garden Centres Torquay branch is set to take part in the Race for Life at Westpoint near Exeter on July 21.

Branch manager Emma Devonald along with Mo Chambers Sarah Hayden and Allison Woolgar are currently in training for the 5km run. They are aiming to raise over £400 for the breast cancer charity.

Emma said: “Most people know someone who has been affected by breast cancer or another cancer.

“We each have our own experience and decided we would undertake a team effort to raise funds.”

Local accountants refurbish Scout and Guide HQ at Holsworthy

The 1st Holsworthy Scout and Guide HQ has received a refreshing makeover thanks to local chartered accountancy firm Simpkins Edwards. As part of its ongoing commitment to volunteering in the local community, the firm’s Holsworthy staff - based in The Square - took a day out of the office to paint, decorate and give a new lease of life to the joint Scout and Guide’s HQ.

A team of nine spent the day painting the interior walls and window frames of the HQ before turning their attention to the exterior of the building; clearing gutters, paths and removing a huge pile of wood.

Mecca Bingo clubs around the country have teamed up with Variety the Children's Charity in order to help them in their support of children and young people across the UK who are disabled or disadvantaged.

Both renowned British brands have collaborated to create The Sunshine Flyer - a new bingo game costing £1, with 5p from each and every play being donated to the Variety Club of Great Britain in order to fund their incredible work.

Candles on the Canal: Family, Live Music and a Time to Remember…

Candles on the Canal is a new event hosted by local charity Hospiscare . Its purpose is to bring hundreds of local people together for a relaxed and uplifting evening in memory of loved ones who have died, taking place on Saturday 21 September from 4:30pm. Everyone is welcome regardless of who they are remembering, how long ago their loved ones died or whether they were looked after by Hospiscare.

A wounded veteran from Devon is to take part in a unique overnight mountain bike challenge from 27 – 28 June, despite having serious mobility issues.
