Charity reeling with unwanted kittens boom

Blue Cross is calling on cat owners in Devon to neuter their pets to avoid the hundreds of unplanned litters of kittens needing the charity’s care.

The charity is facing a hidden pet welfare crisis due to the ongoing cost of living crisis and is concerned that pet owners are not neutering their pet to avoid vet fees. There are also concerns that owners may be deliberately breeding their cat to sell the kittens, but a lack of buyers leads to them being brought into rescue or simply abandoned to fend for themselves.

Bloodbikes ride away with £1,000 from the Freemasons

Devon Race for Life events cancelled

ORGANISERS of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events in Devon regret to announce the much-loved events are cancelled for 2020.

The charity has taken the difficult decision to withdraw all 400 Race for Life events across the UK this year to protect the country’s health as restrictions on mass gatherings caused by the COVID-19 pandemic continue.

This includes the Race for Life 5K and 10K at Plymouth, Barnstaple, Exeter planned for later this year, is now cancelled. Participants who have already signed up will be contacted directly by the charity.

Devon charities scoop share of £1million fund

11 charities based in Devon have received donations of £1,000 each as part of the Movement for Good awards.

The awards, set up by specialist insurer Ecclesiastical, will see a total of £1million given to charities across the UK this summer. Members of the public were invited to nominate causes close to their hearts, with 500 awards of £1,000 available for donation.

Student raises £10,000 for mental health charity by running five marathons in five days

A University of Exeter student has raised £10,000 for those affected by mental health issues during the coronavirus pandemic by running 131 miles in just five days.

Joey Higham had never taken part in a marathon before, but completed five in less than a week to raise awareness of the work of the charity Mind. Last year Healthy Homes for Wellbeing, run by Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) launched a Winter Warmth campaign highlighting the issues of fuel poverty and hard to heat homes faced by local residents each and every winter. On Sunday 7th June at 7.30pm #BellyLaughsatHome will land on the screens of Devon’s residents, with money being raised for Devon Air Ambulance , Daisi and FareShare South West.

Musicians and medics record stay-at-home charity single

A group of local musicians and medics have joined together to produce a charity video.

The eighteen talented performers have recorded a version of Help! by The Beatles.

And they all played their part from the safety of their own homes.

A Devon primary school girl is determined to help other children during the pandemic after realising that not all children would be safe at home whilst schools are closed.
