From homelessness to hospitality: Café EX4, Exeter’s new lifeline

Five years ago, Dan was homeless, living in supported accommodation, and struggling with addiction and mental health challenges.

This month — the same week The Salvation Army in Exeter Temple celebrates its 145th anniversary — Dan stood alongside Majors Carl and Elizabeth Di-Palma who lead the church and charity in Exeter, to watch celebrity chef Michael Caines (MBE DL), cut the ribbon on Café EX4, a community café run by people with lived experience of homelessness, addiction, and neurodiversity.

Café EX4 operates under a licence agreement, making the café a tenant of...

Comic Relief spirit sweeps through Exeter

Comic Relief marked its 25th year of helping children in Africa and the UK yesterday. Businesses, clubs and schools all over Exeter got involved by doing ‘something funny for money’ in a bid to make this year’s Red Nose Day the best fundraiser yet.

Exeter College were hit by Comic Relief fever early on when they held a ‘bake off’ in their training kitchens between catering students and three of the Exeter Chiefs. Supported by the Rugby Players representative and with Sainsbury’s and Silver Spoon providing the ingredients, the team kick started the Comic Relief season on the 28th...

The following months involved gruelling treatment and a long emotional rollercoaster ride. Then miraculously, the tumour started to shrink and Gemma...

Exeter City get a positive result – on and off the pitch

When Exeter City beat visiting team Northampton Town by a 3-0 scoreline recently, few of the 414 visiting Cobblers travelled back to the East Midlands particularly pleased.

So the Grecians were delighted to receive an email from Rowland Jordan on Monday afternoon, a disabled Northampton Town supporter, who was delighted with the matchday experience from the perspective of a wheelchair user – though the match result was notable by its absence! Fittingly, it coincided with the club’s annual bucket collection to go towards improving the disabled facilities around the stadium.

University students set to raise funds for Exmouth RNLI

Students from the University of Exeter have plans to set up a fundraising branch on campus for their local lifeboat station. In addition, two other groups from the University already have events planned at the end of March specifically to support the launch and recovery vehicle appeal at Exmouth RNLI.

It is hoped that, with enough support, a branch can be established that will both raise the profile of the RNLI among the University population, as well as raising funds. Community Fundraising Manager for the South West, Frances Warren comments:

"We are delighted students at...
