Devon charities announced as partners for huge weekend of live music

Four Devon-based charities have been selected to be official partners for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

TK Maxx presents Live At Powderham runs for four nights from Thursday June 25 to Sunday June 28, featuring headline shows from vocal powerhouse Teddy Swims, seven-time GRAMMY winner Alanis Morissette and global superstar Lewis Capaldi.

Each night will see a local charity given the opportunity to have a team of fundraisers on site and for 2026 Live At Powderham will support Devon-based charities who make a big impact in the communities they serve....

City soldier's 1000 km static bike ride

A local soldier is challenging himself to cycle 1000 km on a stationary bicycle for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision impaired ex-Service men and women. Steve Tonking, aged 34 and from Exeter, enjoys tackling fitness challenges and will be running the London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK later this year. He is now set to raise the bar and cycle a distance of 1000 km which is equal to cycling from Beeston, Nottingham to John O’Groats. 280 bags of goods donated at BHF event

British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops are delighted to announce that 280 bags were donated to their Bag It. Beat It. event held at Princesshay. The donated items will now go on to be sold in local BHF shops and could generate up to £5,000to help fund life-saving research.

BHF shop’s Bag it. Beat it. campaign urged the public to donate bags of unwanted items. Every bag donated funds life-saving heart research, helping over 40,000 little heroes continue to fight congenital heart disease.

Ethical butchers and restaurant Rusty Pig has announced a charity partnership with emergency couriers Devon Freewheelers for 2015.

Chef Robin Rea and his team are busy planning various events to be held at the Ottery St Mary eaterie throughout the year, including quizzes and themed dining.

Robin said: “I’ve been aware of the charity for some time and I really admire the selfless work carried out by the volunteer riders. They do a great job for the people of Devon, and I’m delighted to support them.”

Charity run organisers call for sponsors

The South West's largest corporate charity run organised by Exeter law firm Michelmores, is calling for sponsors to boost fundraising in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Now in its 16th year, the Michelmores Charity Run attracts 1,000 runners and raises in excess of £20,000 for a chosen charity. The run, which will take place on Thursday 11 June 2015, covers a 5K city course starting in the heart of Exeter at Cathedral Green, finishing at Exeter Castle.

Charity makes Tom's dream come true

Exeter based charity Dream-A-Way recently provided a holiday grant to young Tom from East Devon and were delighted to meet up with him and to hear about his wonderful holiday experience Tom flew to Rome with his carers in November for a 5 day holiday at the Star Hotel Metropole. Tom is an absolutely delightful young man and it was a real pleasure to spend some time with him and his lovely carers, Julie and Kate. He has no vision whatsoever and is autistic. Nothing though, has stopped him from researching foreign countries and cuisines and cultures.

Special Christmas care at Exeter hospice

Exeter’s hospice was full over Christmas as doctors and nurses cared for 12 people needing acute specialist help. Dawn Berger, pictured, who lives in St Thomas spent a very enjoyable Christmas Day at the hospice after being admitted a week ago.

She said: “My husband and friends visited, I had a wonderful Christmas lunch sitting in my bed, there was a visit from Santa who gave me toiletries and chocolates and like everybody else does at Christmas I fell asleep.” Dawn’s dog Darcy enjoyed spending the day on her bed.

Dream-A-Way, the 2014 charity for Princesshay, were delighted to receive the support of Mercedes-Benz of Exeter with the generous donation of a Mercedes-Benz A Class 180 for their festive raffle.

Dream-A-Way was formed in 1993 and during 2014 they have proudly celebrated their 21st Anniversary. Throughout this time the charity has been managed by a strong team of volunteers, all of whom are unpaid and receive no expenses, payments or honoraria thus ensuring that all funds raised and generously donated are used to support local people with disabilities.

Run reaches 2,222 mile finale in Exeter

Twenty-one-year-old Gilbert Toby Ip aims to complete an incredible year-long challenge in Exeter High Street on New Year’s Eve.

Gilbert, an ex Student of Queen’s College Taunton who is currently studying at Bath University, set himself the enormous target of running 2014 miles during 2014, all in aid of Help for Heroes and The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

Having completed 2014 miles during early December he simply moved his goal to 2,222 miles - culminating in a staggering 100km ultra-marathon on New Year’s Eve.

This Christmas, British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops are urging South West people to give back by donating their unwanted Christmas presents to charity. The profit raised from BHF shops goes on to fund life-saving research into heart disease.

Over half [64%] of people from the South West said they receive two unwanted Christmas presents every year. With the average price per Christmas gift at £21.75, over £2.7 billion pounds worth of unwanted presents could be donated to charity this year.
