The 2014 Club President of Exeter Golf and Country Club has raised £4,400 for local charity, Hospiscare.

Hilary Weatherley, who was Club President of the Exeter golf club until January, decided to use his passion for live music to offer new events at the club to generate fundraising. With a background in music, Hilary is a keen folk fan and wanted to celebrate the talents of fellow club member, Steve Knightley, of Topsham-based folk band, Show of Hands.

Steve performed live to a full-house of 160 people at the club in July in what was one of the largest shows on his recent tour, with proceeds going to Hospiscare.

Hilary opted for another live music event for his President’s Night in early autumn, defying the tradition of a dinner and dance, showcasing more local performers, Sarah Yeo and India Electric Co.

Fundraising took place across the year at Exeter Golf and Country Club with successful events such as the Club Comedy Night, men versus ladies teams of staff and members at the Rock Solid Race in March, golf events, bridge events, gym-based races and fancy dress fitness classes.

Hilary’s tactics worked and his laid-back approach to fundraising led to the presentation of a cheque to Hospiscare’s community fundraiser, Susie Healey for £4,400.
Hilary said,

“I chose Hospiscare as my charity as my partner's father spent his last days at Hospiscare in Exeter. I was impressed by the caring, professional approach to a hugely emotional situation. I visited him at lunchtimes and the evenings and he often said how excellent all the carers were, showing kindness, friendliness and the utmost compassion. Other friends of mine have experienced the same levels of care at this Exeter based charity so I was happy to nominate Hospiscare as my chosen charity. I am delighted that my fellow members at Exeter Golf and Country Club were so supportive of my choice.”

Hospiscare gives high-quality care and dedicated support to people who are terminally ill, free of charge.
