Fire Service support team turn rescuers as tiny kitten is saved from car

A group of fire station workers who usually leave dramatic rescues to their firefighters got a taste of the action when a tiny kitten became perilously stuck inside a car.

The usually desk-based colleagues were called upon to help when a member of the public made an unexpected detour and drove to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters at The Knowle in Clyst St George because they could hear a cat crying out from somewhere in their car.

Exeter Chamber of Commerce raises over £5,000 for Devon charities

Christmas has come early for two local Devon based charities, The Mede and Dawlish Garden’s Trust, following the successful charity prize draw at Exeter Chamber’s Exeter Business Dinner in November. Doctor John Rutter Reflects on the Last 35 Years of Hospiscare

As 2017 draws to a close, the year when local charity Hospiscare celebrated its 35th Anniversary, Dr John Rutter who worked for the organisation in the early 80s is back working there again now at the age of 69. Sun Lodge of Exmouth, Masonic Charities Association recently held its presentation evening for local Charities and Organisations. The presentation evening which is in its twelfth year saw £2,200 presented to nine organisations.

Over £30,000 raised by police force to benefit charities

Over the last three years, officers and staff across Devon & Cornwall Police have participated in and organised fundraising activities which have benefitted both local and national charities.

The funds, now totalling over £30,000, were raised in a wide variety of ways, from the purchase of epaulettes, to charity bake sales and even a ‘guess the weight of the ferret’ competition. This is, of course, only part of the charitable endeavours of colleagues who both on and off duty raise huge sums for local and national charities.

Headway Devon Joins “Friends Against Scams” Scheme

Local brain injury charity Headway Devon is proud to have joined a national scheme that aims to prevent people falling victim to scams.

Friends Against Scams is an initiative run by National Trading Standards which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to "Take a Stand Against Scams".

As part of the scheme all Headway Devon staff are being offered training in recognising scams and supporting people to avoid becoming victims of fraud.

Dan Dickens, 60 from Exeter, has found a unique way of volunteering for local charity Hospiscare in one of their Exeter shops. Dan, a local artist, has bought his talents into a niche role at the South Street Shop (Exeter), which specialises in vintage and antique books, music, art and collectables.

Kids’ snowflakes bring Christmas cheer to local charity

Hospiscare has been getting in the Christmas spirit with the help of children from across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

Children from the Exwick Ark Nursery, Little MarVals in Pinhoe, Little Dragons at Clyst St George, Exeter Junior School and Kiddi Caru have been busy making snowflakes to decorate the charity’s Warehouse Store in Marsh Barton.

Hundreds of gifts donated to RGB's charity Christmas present appeal

RGB Building Supplies is thanking the Exeter community for donating gifts to its 2017 Christmas Present Appeal. All presents have now been given to Children’s Hospice South West to pass on to the children and families it supports.

Following a call out inviting customers and the local community to donate gifts suitable for a child of any age or their parents, over 300 gifts were placed under Christmas trees in RGB branches.

Macmillan gives over £124,800 to keep Devon cancer patients above the breadline

Macmillan Cancer Support has revealed that in 2016 it gave out grants totalling approximately £124,8001, to Devon residents who were struggling with the financial hardship that cancer can bring. Across the south west region, the charity provided just over £849,3001 in grants to help keep cancer patients financially afloat last year.
