Exeter Deaf Academy calls for volunteers

Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education is celebrating national Volunteers’ Week by launching its first ever Fundraising Volunteer recruitment campaign.

Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) is an annual event celebrating volunteers and volunteering across the UK and this year marks its 30th anniversary. To coincide with this milestone, the Academy is kick-starting its recruitment campaign and invites you to be part of something amazing.

The Deaf Academy is soon to embark on an exciting new build project and will be reliant on the help of the local community at an unprecedented level to support and fund building a new Academy due to open in September 2016.

Enthusiastic and committed volunteers are needed to represent the Academy; talk about the work of the Deaf Academy, attend events and collect donations on their behalf. There are many exciting new roles, full details of which can be found at www.exeterdeafacademy.ac.uk/volunteer. You do not need any previous experience of deafness or deaf culture, just a passion to get involved and make a difference.

Volunteering for the Academy can present a wealth of opportunities and benefits.

Not only will all volunteers receive full training and support, there will also be the chance to take part in local events, meet and work with new and inspiring people from across the community, develop and enhance interpersonal and public speaking skills as well as be part of a fun, enthusiastic and supportive team and learn more about deafness.  By representing Exeter Deaf Academy, you can make a difference within your local community and crucially, help change the lives of deaf children and young adults.

Wendy, who volunteered at the Deaf Academy for three years, encourages other members of the community to get involved. She said: “My time volunteering for the Academy was very rewarding. Everyone was extremely welcoming, appreciative and supportive and you feel like you are contributing to the children’s experiences and development.”

If you would like to be part of something amazing and represent Exeter Deaf Academy in your local area then the Academy would love to hear from you!
