BBC wine expert backs Hospiscare event

Renowned wine expert Susy Atkins is joining forces with Honiton’s Deer Park Hotel to lead a taste tour of South America – and all to support local charity Hospiscare’s plans to build a new East Devon Day Hospice.

At the event on March 14, Susy – who is the resident wine expert on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen – will guide guests through ten tables of specially matched tapas dishes and wine, exploring the nuances of each grape and explaining the chemistry behind winning combinations. Each table will feature a different wine plus a specific tapas dish prepared by Deer Park’s head chef from ingredients supplied by local producers.

Susy Atkins said: “There's a real buzz around South American wines at the moment, not least in the run-up to the World Cup, and I'm delighted to present a range of exciting styles from this part of the world, in aid of a very good cause indeed - Hospiscare's East Devon day centre appeal. Even better, there's some lovely canapés to enjoy with the wine, especially created to match each one. See you there.”

All proceeds from the event will go towards Hospiscare’s new East Devon Day Hospice Appeal, which is raising money to build and complete a new state-of-the-art facility in Honiton. Part funded by an NHS Trust grant, plus generous support from sister charities, the day hospice will feature spa-like treatment rooms, a large and comfortable patient lounge, a beautiful garden, plus educational facilities for the training of healthcare professionals and students, and access to palliative care specialists for support, advice or treatment.

Building work is due to start in the coming weeks and once completed the day hospice will serve the whole East Devon region as a haven of care for thousands of local people. To ensure that the day hospice is as fully equipped as it can be, Hospiscare still needs to raise £230k
